An individual one hour session costs $120.  Payment is due for your session each time we meet, unless we have made other arrangements in advance.  I accept payment in the form of cash, personal check, or credit/debit card via PayPal.

The 50 Minute Hour

Only in Therapyland can an hour last a mere 50 minutes.  I have decided to do away with this odd custom.  It seems to me that the hour you schedule to talk about how you will meet your goals and solve your problems should be respected in its entirety.  Therefore, the clock we use in our sessions functions like all the rest of the clocks we use in our lives:  an hour lasts 60 minutes.

First Session Options

I offer two options for our initial consultation:

We can meet free of charge for 30 minutes.  During that time, we can talk about what's going on in your life and get a sense of whether we would work well together.  If we decide that we are a good fit for therapy, I will give you some paperwork to take with you so you can look it over and fill it out, and we will schedule a full session wherein we will review that paperwork and begin collaborating in planning your therapy.

If you don't think that a half hour will be enough time to discuss what is happening for you and explore our potential relationship, we can schedule a full hour for $60, which is half the cost of a regularly priced session.

I offer these discounted rates because I think you should have the opportunity to check me out and get an idea of how we might work together before spending a lot of money.  I also want to make sure you are getting the best possible care; if you are experiencing something outside the scope of my expertise, I will refer you to a therapist who can help you.

Including Others in Your Sessions

Sometimes you might want to bring important others in your life to your sessions, especially when you are going through changes and want people to understand how the changes will affect you and them.  I am very open to this possibility, as it has been my experience that taking this step can be crucial to promoting support and understanding in your life.  If we agree that including someone else in your sessions from time to time is helpful, I will charge $30 per person in addition to your regular session fee.

Gender Consults

If you are seeking a letter of recommendation for hormone therapy or surgery, I am happy to meet with you for this purpose.  We can schedule a gender consult wherein I will ask you to tell me about your decision to medically transition.  In almost all situations, I can then provide you with a recommendation letter for your physician that confirms you are capable of making an informed decision about your healthcare.  You can read more about this process on the Trans*Mission page.

I charge a flat rate of $150 for a gender consult and documentation for hormone recommendation, and $250 for surgery (it's more expensive because the assessment is more complex, and typically our consult will take more time).  After we meet for your consult and documentation has been provided, it is completely up to you to decide whether you would like to establish an ongoing therapeutic relationship with me.

The "Make Change" Idea

I am well aware of the disproportionate effect of under- and unemployment on LGBTQ people, along with the exorbitant costs associated with gender transitions.  Accordingly, it is my commitment to make change by keeping my session fees as low as I possibly can, and by maintaining a limited number of reduced cost session openings for people who need them.  Here's how the "make change" idea works:

If you are in a financial position to be able to afford my regular fee, your money not only goes to help you reach your personal goals, it also goes to help others access services they might not otherwise be able to afford.  I set aside a percentage of every session fee paid and put it toward a fund that enables me to offer reduced-fee services.  The number of openings I have for reduced-fee sessions depends upon the number of people who are able to pay my regular fee.

Please feel free to contact me to see if I currently have reduced-fee sessions and gender consults available.

I am not currently participating in any insurance panels.  Generally, I prefer not to accept insurance because there can be limitations to your rights as a client that are imposed by the contract of your managed care organization.  I believe that you have the right to full control over the course and conditions of your therapy; therefore, I prefer to work on a fee-for-service basis that affords you those rights.  However, I can function as an out of network provider with your insurance company, and can give you a receipt or billing statement to submit for reimbursement.
